Sustainable hair

As our society bends towards sustainability we see all kinds of ways in which we can conserve, whether it’s spending less money, riding bikes instead of cars, using less electricity. I like to think that every drop in the bucket counts towards a greater good, more conciousness and less greed and consumption. On that note, I want to take a minute to talk about sustainability and hair.

Here is Tracy. She came in for a haircut today, and I took her photo before we began. This is the grown out haircut I gave her almost a year ago.

Tracy does not shampoo her hair, and uses no products. She understands her own scalps natural ability to support her thick hair and all its moisture needs. As a curly haired woman, she has been told her whole life that she needs to strip her hair daily, then refill it with synthetic gums and tacky goo’s to make it look good. She’s not buying any of it.

Her head of hair is literally one of the most glorious heads of hair that i’ve ever had the pleasure of working on. Thick, coarse, bouncy, with one of the strongest curl pattern’s I’ve ever seen. She embraces what she has, and doesn’t try and fight it. And, she understands the power of a good yearly haircut that will grow out well.

Sustainability is just that. Using what you have. I try and take as sustainable a approach to hair as I can. My clients have always been the types that want fabulous hair, and almost zero upkeep. That may not sound possible, but I have my ways;) The right cut should minimize the amount of energy used in styling, as well as the need for many products.
I’m gonna do my best to stay true to my commitment to maximum good hair with minimum impact on your time, energy, pocketbook, and the planet. It’s a drop in the bucket.

p.s. We will talk about sustainable hair products later.
