#bethefair interview 4…..Liz Lashes

7U6A3361Elizabeth Hull Suman. What can I say about her. Where do I begin? A long time girl friend of mine from Seattle, She now lives in NYC. Liz Suman, AKA Liz Lashes rules.

She is the only human that I ever semi-maintained a snail-mail letter correspondence with, and was also my partner in petty highschool troublemaking. She has inspired me since the moment I laid eyes on her long lashes, immaculate style, and ‘don’t talk about it, be about it’ attitude.

-1I Love this lady. To me, she is a friend, a confidant, a make it happen lady, a writer and editor and photographer, a party girl, a New Yorker with a pacific twist. ( Or maybe the other way around?)

This picture is with our friend Miguel. We are drinking 40’s and braiding hair.

Want to know more? here is her interview………

Liz Lashes

Screen Shot 2013-11-04 at 1.13.47 PMWhat do you call yourself? Example……..Wilderbabe hairdresser mama, Jewelry designer, an asshole with a sour grimace. WTF.

Roving reporter with a penchant for typewriters and underdogs.

If you could manifest your destiny, what would your life look like in 3 years?

Dream destiny would be replacing my day jobs with my labors of love. The job description would look something like: “Bicoastal freelance journalist professionally rewarded for personal. Passion projects including but not limited to Klughaus Gallery, the New York City Type-Off™ and carefully-curated Wilderbabe craft bazaars with the crew of talented women I love and admire on both coasts.”

Official headquarters  would be an amazing dove sanctuary I found on the top of a little mountain in California last summer.  It’s s big ranch house with beautiful gardens, doves, and human-sized bird cages perched in the middle of LA but isolated miles above it so you can see the city but not hear it. This crazy dove clubhouse would be ground zero for book writing, raccoon-eyed prom queens in chaise lounge-themed photo shoots, fort-building, Valley of the Dolls parties and other strange/intelligent/pragmatic/otherworldly adventures in New York, Seattle, LA, Rio de Janeiro, etc.

If that answer is too complicated, then I would manifest myself as a superhero with glowing purple LED LAZER-shooting EYELASHES with which I could zap my enemies with a single rapid flutter.

Where do you go to get inspired to create?

Screen Shot 2013-11-04 at 1.13.40 PMSolo NYC walking missions. I always get inspired on the days I don’t plan and just go wherever the city takes me. I usually follow shiny objects or my instincts, but sometimes I’ll leave the house on a Sunday morning and flip a coin to decide which direction to go first. I get my best ideas from walking around Brooklyn and Manhattan and Queens taking photos of buildings and art exhibits and strangers. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve lived here – you can always be surprised by New York City. Or you should be if you’re not an asshole.

Where do you get free (at the river, in the mountains, at the beach)?

Discovery Park. The Williamsburg Bridge. Southern Oregon. Group Chat with my friends Jess and Tyler.

What is your go-to DIY project this year?

Professional labor of love = Klughaus Gallery. Klug is an awesome art gallery that a few close friends and I have been working hard to build from a great idea into something big.

Secret DIY passion = 3D jewelry boxes.  Raw Materials: misfit toys, abandoned jewelry, poker chips, miniature snow globes, love notes, tiny people, LED lights, gold spray paint, shellac, diamonds.  Translating seemingly disparate parts into a cohesive whole somehow simultaneously both feeds and soothes a deep-rooted need I have for organized chaos. Or it might just be that I love anything involving sequins.

What are your top three beauty products?

Roxie Hunt on the West Coast, Giulia Heiman on the East. A Mason Pearson brush for everyplace in between.

Zombie Apocalypse, you can take five things with you. What do you bring?

Family, cats, Miguel, my girlfriends, a man who can escort me to a black tie event in a tuxedo, drink a tall can on a bench and chill with my grandmother—preferably all in the same evening, vodka, a knife. That’s seven things! But Miguel could carry the vodka and knife.

What is your hair MO or philosophy?

I’ve been rocking flower crowns since the 80’s.

What women in history do you most admire?

Margaret Suman, Effy Stonem, Scarlett O’Hara, Patti Smith, Tina Brown, Katie Girls, Seattle girls, Roxie Hunt.

And to get even more of a look at the lovely Liz Lashes, here is a peek from her MASS APPEAL Q&A from 2010.

Nickname? Liz Lashes

Occupation? Freelance Journalist; Resident Publicist for Klughaus Gallery; Co-Founder of the

New York City Type-Off™

Age? 29

Hometown? 206!

Has anyone ever confused you for Zooey Deschanel? Often. I get the comparison—quirky girl

with red lips and Cookie Monster eyes. But I certainly don’t bake cupcakes for strangers. We

need to have met at least once. I’d say I’m a more street smart version of her.

Graffiti artist you’d like to meet. Probably dated him when I was 16!

Who do you keep closer, your friends or your enemies? Don’t have time for enemies.

Here is Liz Lashes Links List and a bit about work she has done.

Village Voice: Helped film and produce this artist profile about my friend Joe. We set up the shoot in an alley and time-lapsed the mural being painted for 10 days. Some days shooting from the car in the pouring rain and getting pizza delivered to the alley like in Ninja Turtles. We had an LED boom box and wine coolers and camper chairs and homeless people and skaters and art buyers and a mobile office set up in heat wave NYC summer. It was awesome.
