How To Use Mindfulness Meditation In Your Beauty Routine

7U6A2315You might not have thought about it, but your beauty routine can be the perfect time in which to squeeze in a bit of meditation. We don’t mean you should be closing your eyes while crimping your hair or applying lipstick, of course, but you should be making the most of being in the moment. Here’s why it’s so good for you.

Pretty on the Inside

If you’re wondering what applying skin products and making yourself look beautiful have to do with being mindful, think about this: you spend lots of time every day looking after yourself, right? All that time can be used to cleanse, tone, moisturize, primp, fluff and prettify while you’re also becoming happier and healthier. This can be easily achieved: all you have to do is be present in the moment.

Research shows that being more mindful makes you more present in the moment, which in turn makes your mind peaceful. If you have greater peace of mind, this spirals into happiness, and greater all-round wellbeing, from the mental and emotional to the physical kind. Sounds pretty good, so the next time you’re exfoliating, clear your mind and really focus on the product you’re scrubbing over your body.

De-Stress while You Beautify

We lead very busy, often stressful, lives. Taking time to relax and unwind isn’t always easy, but that’s where your beauty routine can come in handy. While you’re lathering skin brightening products or body lotions after a hot bath, it’s the perfect time to open up your senses. Feel the product as you massage it into your skin with gentle movements, smell its delicious scent, look at its color or texture, and so on. Even if you take just a few minutes to do this, it’s a great way to relax and feel like you’re being pampered at the spa – even if you’re just in your bathroom!

Beauty and the Breath

Besides for awakening your senses during beauty routines, pay attention to your breathing. It’s not only a good way to relax but it can help to make your skin look better. When you breathe deeply, you boost your body’s cellular regeneration because it enables better circulation. By bringing more blood to the surface of your skin, you can help to make it brighter and healthier. But there’s another bonus: breathing deeply helps the skin cells to repair themselves, which leads to youthful and glowing skin.

Embrace the Mind-Skin Connection

Research has pointed to a connection between what’s going on in your mind and the state of your skin. If you think about this on a practical level, it makes sense: when you’re stressed, for instance, your internal woes tend to crop up on your skin in the form of breakouts. This is because your emotional state influences your body more than you might think, such as by disrupting your hormones.

Relaxing through mindfulness meditation is often used in conjunction with medical care when it comes to treating a variety of skin issues, such as psoriasis, acne, and eczema. In a study of psoriasis patients, the people who listened to tapes of mindfulness meditation while having treatment for their psoriasis revealed skin that healed at a quicker rate than those who only underwent the treatment. By taking time to relax and meditate while you’re treating or pampering your skin, you encourage it to heal.

Don’t Forget to Show the Love!

Mindfulness is also about remembering to acknowledge and appreciate your body and what it does for you. Sometimes we get so caught up in what we want to change about ourselves, and the beauty routines we undergo so that we can look better, that we don’t stop to think of how amazing our bodies are. So when you’re primping and prettifying, see yourself as though you’re doing so for the first time.

Appreciate your hair, eyes, skin, how your smile lights up the room, and so on. By doing this on a daily basis, you will start to feel good on the inside as well as on the outside. It will boost your confidence but also keep you in tune with seeing yourself in a positive light, preventing you from falling into the negative self-talk trap where you keep noticing what you consider to be flaws whenever you look in the mirror. Doing this is a great way to start the day on a happy, thankful footing. Best of all you’ll have a smile on your face that is sure to rub off on those you meet along your way.

Get Your Beauty Sleep

When you get enough sleep, you look better. This is a fact and it happens because your skin cells repair themselves while you sleep. Not getting enough sleep can leave you with blotchy, acne-prone, and dull skin, thanks to how a lack of sleep stimulates hormones that disintegrate your skin’s collagen. It also inhibits circulation so oxygen and nutrients don’t get to your skin in sufficient amounts.

A bit of meditation after your nightly bath and skincare routine can come in handy to help you sleep, according to a study that found mindfulness can help you slow down and unwind before bed, resulting in better quality sleep. Make meditation a part of your beauty sleep plan and wake up to gorgeous skin!

Adding a splash of mindful meditation to your daily beauty routine is a great way to relax, self-pamper, and feel happier. So turn your time in front of the mirror into a quick meditation session and look good while feeling fabulous.
