My sister always had prettier hair than me. As children, I envied her straight, long, shiny hair that was fine and silky, but not thin. She dyed it using Cherry Chocolate by Feria, and it shimmered and looked like the model on the cover of the box.
Bitch. I used to think. She got the hair and the brains. All I have is this frizzy short hair that I can’t stop impulsively cutting and a D in algebra. Sisterly love is complicated.
We used to fight just to push each others buttons. I remember our last fight. I was 18 years old. I won’t go into the details, but I think we both decided simultaneously that we could choose to get along and be loving or not, and we both quietly chose the former.
Here are a couple sisterly love photos that I found of my sister and I and my brother and I in various states of hair-doing. Can you tell they both take place during awkward phases in my life? Okay let’s be fair. Life is one big awkward phase. And please excuse the scribbles from my children.
While we are on the subject, I recently did hair for a wedding party of 4 lovely sisters. Here is a sweet photo of sisterly make-up love, and a pretty bride braid.
I can’t imagine life without my older sister.
Today for #DIYhair Friday, I would like to teach you a trick that my sister taught me for creating the perfect effortlessly unkempt top-knot. I’m filing it under Everyday Hairstyles because it is such a quick and easy go-to style. Here is the…….
Perfect twisty top-knot
With a bonus hair plant!
1. Start with a high ponytail on top of the head. Split the pony into 2 equal sections, and twist them both forward.
2. With one twist in each hand, wrap them backwards in opposite directions around the base of the ponytail.
3. Continue wrapping the twists in opposite directions around the base until the ends are too short to keep wrapping. Keep in mind that you don’t want to wrap too tight because we are going for a more effortless messy look. So use medium tension when wrapping twists.
4. Stick a pin through the ends of both twists and secure them into the base of the bun. Stick a couple more pins around it to secure it. If you have very thick hair, use large bobbys.
Now gently tug bits of the braid apart to bulk it up and balance it out.
5. Now find a cool plant of flower and stick a bobby pin through the base of it.You can check out this post for DIY plant clips.
6. Finish of your top-knot by pinning in your garnish.
And please, don’t forget your lady parts!
Now, consider calling your sister to chat and catch up. That is what weekends are for.
XOXO, HTHG
