Let’s start with the basics…..Get your braiding technique down. Practice in the mirror, and then without a mirror by feel to get the braiding finger muscle memory built up.

Here are some things to consider…….IMG_6683 IMG_1306

Hair texture and length determine your braid.

If your hair is all one length, your braid will be fuller. Layered hair braids will be less full, getting thinner towards the ends.

Fine and freshly washed hair can be very slippery and not hold braids well. A good remedy for this is to use a texture spray like HTHG’s favorite beach spray that you can make in your own kitchen. People that use the no-poo method tend to have a much easier time getting their braids and up-dos to stay in place because the hair is not coated with slippery waxes and silicone.

A great tip for fine hair braids is to separate the hair into 3, then make a small braid out of one of the 3 sections. Secure it, then braid the smaller braid in with the other 2 sections. This looks really cool, and helps the braid stay together better.

Also, a perfect remedy for braids that are slippery and blah is to add some highlights to your hair. This will give more texture and definition to the braid, making it really pop. Check out the difference here. The hair with no highlights hides the braid, and the hair with a little color added really shows! Interested? Try this easy DIY foil method.

More ways to make your braids better….. Don’t pull them too tight. A tight forced braid doesn’t flatter anyone.

Don’t try to make it too perfect. Messy braids are gorgeous and look effortless.

Once your hair is braided and secure, pull it apart a little bit to muss it up. This will plump it up.

And a little tip, sometimes dirty hair braids better:)
