Frustrating. Enlightening. Productive. Telling. Forgiving. Heated.

I found myself up against a barrier of language and common experience. It got me thinking about what exactly feminism means to me, and how it surely means something different to everyone based on our own experiences.

By the end of the conversation I found myself wanting to invent another term that relates to modern day Feminism but  implies something between humanism, indepentantism, and womanism, but not in a reaction to men. Something totally separate. My mind reeled trying to find the words to explain the feeling of what it means to be a woman living in our society, a woman who writes about beauty, about how it feels to be objectified, and how it is all perpetuated. And how we are all struggling with this. Feminists and non feminists. And how being a man who is taught by society in general to not express his feelings in a healthy way is the norm.

Beyonce is a feminist. Feminism is a hot term right now, which is awesome because I want to raise my daughters in a place where people are talking about what it means to be a strong and independant woman. To me, to the best of my ability to explain with actual words, feminism means exercising my right to make my own choices.

What does feminism it mean to you? How is modern feminism different than feminism in the 60’s and 70’s? The 20’s? The suffragettes? Big questions here. I know. I think it is important that we talk about it and I welcome your thoughts and comments. Gloria Steinem, If you are on the line, please weigh in.
