Flor, In NOLA, Free Your Pits Crew

IMG_4982Thank you for your Instagram page. It serves as constant reassurance that I am making the right decision. It really struck me when I was mocked last month for my armpit hair by a first grade girl who I teach. Wow.

I was teaching an after-school group of first graders when one girl asked me to lift up my arms. Knowing what was coming, I did, and was immediately mocked for “looking like a man”. I felt a huge role reversal as the girl and a few of her friends literally pointed at me and laughed. “If men are allowed to grow armpit hair, why can’t I?” They all seemed very confused; it was as if they didn’t even know that their bodies will grow hair in the next 6 or 7 years. How unreal is it that our (female) children are some of the biggest opponents of natural body hair?

I will continue to push forward this movement until it reaches its deserved normalcy. Check out my instagram page dedicated to inspiring young women in STEM at @electricgirlsnola

Done and Done. Thanks, Flor. xo
