Wait! before you pick up those shears….

I have a little insight to share with you. It seems appropriate talk about what I like to call ‘impulse cutting.’ I am very guilty of this myself. I cut my hair when I am bored. I cut my hair when I am sad. I cut my hair when I am PMSing. I especially cut my hair when I get a no-show at work and I’m sitting there with my shears in my hand in cut-mode. I have been growing my hair out for 20 years but its barely passed my shoulders now.

I have impulse cut my hair into some pretty cute ‘dos to be sure, but more often than not, I regret it. So, I have come up with a list of questions that I must ask myself before I am allowed to cut my own hair. I am happy to pass this on to those of you who can’t help yourselves sometimes;)

  • I always have a hair goal that I am working towards. Does cutting my hair right now help get me closer to this goal?
  • Have I gotten out enough lately? Maybe I’m just restless and bored. This is not a good enough reason to pick up my shears.
  • Am I waiting for something? feeling anxious? Looking for a distraction? Fretting over my hair after I’ve impulse chopped it is not a good feeling in this situation.
  • Have I been drinking? Especially whiskey? This one’s a no-brainer.
  • Do I just need some drama in my life? Get on facebook instead. I will soon be sufficiently distracted.
  • Am I just having a blue-sy day? Go on a walk or call a friend. Eat some chocolate.

I take a couple minutes to ponder these questions. Often, after giving it some thought I’m relieved that I didn’t just go for it. I give myself a little pat on the back for showing some restraint.

But sometimes, sometimes, an impulse haircut will happen that makes my life significantly better. It was just what I needed and I feel like myself again. The moral of this story, my dears, is don’t be afraid to be sponaneous and adventurous with your hair, but don’t make thoughtless and rash hair decisions. Your hair deserves better than that!
